“Why not the others?”

Jo wondered the same thing. She could understand them not calling 9-1-1 due to their profession, but even an ambulance would’ve helped these people.

“Those heart monitor machines, they was all flat—”

“They were dead? Is that what you’re saying?” Karma clarified.

“Yeah. Only Samuel’s worked. So we thought we’d take him to get help, then come back and deal with the rest. So we left two of our people to watch, only . . .” Jacob’s gaze bounced around the room as he gnawed his lip.

“Only what?”

He leaned forward as if to convey a huge secret. “Only everything was gone when we got back, even the two guys we left. And this time all their cell phones and clothes were left in the car we left them with.”

Shocked, Jo froze then quickly yanked her cell from her pocket and opened up her image file. Her abrupt movements drew Brian’s attention with a lifted brow as if to question her on why she’d interrupted the story. But Jo didn’t have time to run it by him, her instincts were screaming. This . . . this right here would tie her cases together, she knew it with every fiber of her being. “Are any of these people the ones you saw?”

She slid her phone toward Brian and Jacob’s end of the conference table. Brian caught it before it could fall on the floor and held it out to Jacob.

Jacob’s hands shook when he took it, flipping through the pictures. He rounded the table. Leaning down, he hovered over Jo so she could see the screen. An overpowering scent of sweat and fear swamped her, making her wrinkle her nose. Jacob shifted between the photos. “Yeah, these are some of those people. Like the third guy was the meth head and the second woman for sure. And these ones. These two were who we left to watch the warehouse, and this one is Tyrell. They had their skin attached when we left them.”
